Address by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia
Dear Reader,
Contemporary IR is undergoing a transformation phase. States face new threats concerning overt and covert competition between great powers, blatant violations of international law by some states, and planetary-scale challenges.
It is of particular difficulty for smaller states to advance their national interests in today’s ever-changing world, which is also true for Georgia. Despite this Georgia inches closer and closer towards strengthening its national interests via the means of increasing integration with Western states and institutions, which is reconfirmed by the application for accession into the EU submitted on March the 3rd of 2022, as well as by the provision of the European Perspective. The country faces numerous challenges, prima inter alia – the Russian aggression and Kremlin’s unwavering resolve to infringe upon Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A professional civil service, staffed with analytically minded, skillful personnel, along with research and evidence-based decision-making stand out as prerequisites for success of the Georgian state along the path towards strengthening national interests. Constant support for professional and analytical development acts as significant foundations that guides the country in formulating policies in accordance with national interests within the aforementioned changing international political environment.
By publishing the analytical collection – Georgia and International Politics – the Diplomatic Institute creates an analytical platform for deep and professional discussions regarding the current developments in international politics and their impact on Georgia.
I remain hopeful that, along with up-and-coming diplomats, future publications will grow to include papers by other staff-members, both active and retired. It is important for the Ministry that young and experienced professionals present their views and analysis of the developments on the global political stage and their impact on Georgia while upholding the highest analytical standards.
Wishing You Success!
